Das Lied basiert auf einer alten schottischen Weise und wurde vom Dichter Robert Burns niedergeschrieben und veröffentlicht. Durch die Verwendung in der Pfadfinderbewegung wurde das Lied in zahlreiche Sprachen übertragen.
“Auld Lang Syne” ist schottisch, die wörtliche englische Übersetzung “old long since” läßt sich ins Deutsche nur sinngemäß mit „längst vergangene Zeiten” übertragen. Dies ist eines der bekanntesten Lieder im englishsprachigen Raum. Es wird traditionsgemäß zum Jahreswechsel gesungen, um der Verstorbenen des zu Ende gegangenen Jahres zu gedenken.
